Lesson in the 9th form on the topic ‘Choosing Career’

Type: combined

Objectives: to activate usage of topical lexis in speech and writing; to practise pupils’ speaking, listening, writing and reading skills; to widen pupils’ outlook and knowledge on the topic; to develop communicative skills, imagination, creativity and desire to be successful people in life

Equipment: laptop, whiteboard, video ‘Job Interview’; HO1 ‘Choosing Career’, HO2’ Making the right impression’, HO3’ Interview for a job’, tables with statements, tables with texts for ‘Jigsaw reading’, ‘Moving game’, microphone, stickers, pictures of professions

Procedure of the lesson

І. Introduction to the class

ІІ. Warming-ups:

  1. Phonetic drills: try to read tongue-twisters very quickly (see HO1)
  2. Conversational drills
  3. Present your ‘ABC of Professions’

ІІІ. Main part of the lesson:

  1. Vocabulary and speaking practice:
  1. Give different names of professions (see HO1)
  2. Guess the professions by their descriptions
  3. Game tournament: name 2 jobs which…
  4. Work with ‘Myths about Choosing Career’, be ready to do the tasks.
  1. Writing practice:
  1. Fill in the application form
  2. Fill in adverbs ‘Making the right impression’ (see HO2)

  1. Video-based activities:
  1. Pre-watching task: Your advice to people going to job interview
  2. While-watching-task: watch the video and try to remember all nuances
  3. Post-watching task: Is it important to follow all the advice concerning ‘Job Interview’? Can the first interview help you to find the job?
  4. Imagine one of you is an employer, the others – employees. Try to conduct your own ‘Interview for a job’ with the help of my handouts 3
  1. Reading practice: Jigsaw reading

Let’s look forward into your nearest future and try to choose your future career/profession. You’ll work in groups. You’re to work with different texts. Be ready to read the sentences in a chain and try to guess the profession.

  1. Speaking practice:
  1. Choosing profession of a teacher. Have you ever thought about such career? Your task is to prepare ‘Pros and Cons’ of this noble profession. I’ll divide you into 2 halves, discuss all points and be ready to present us your ideas.
  2. Think of non-traditional careers for men and women
  3. Short interview. Ask our guests some questions which you like.
  1. Moving game: Express your thoughts concerning my statements.
  2. Game ‘Who Am I?’
  3. Discuss the quote: ’How do we expect young people to dream, if they don’t know what they can dream about?’
  4. Express your wishes to classmates (use stickers).

ІV. Summarizing

V. Homework. Write about your ‘Profession of Dream’.
